Menzies Proposes a New Learning Transfer Methodology

Dr. Tim Menzies, professor of computer science at NC State University, has been awarded $464,609 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “Transfer Learning in Software Engineering.”

The award will run from August 2, 2014 to June 30, 2017.

Abstract –Software engineers need better ways to recognize best practices in past projects, and to understand how to transfer and adapt those experiences to current projects. No project is exactly like previous projects - hence, the trick is to find which parts of the past are most relevant and can be transferred into the current project. We propose novel automated methods to apply the machine learning concept of transfer learning to adapt lessons from past software engineering project data to new conditions.
