Predicting the Effects Of Climate Change
NC State researchers, including Dr. Nagiza Samatova, are part of a major research initiative aiming at improving scientists’ ability to predict potential consequences of climate change and our ability to predict hurricanes and precipitation patterns. more

Wyatt Delivers Keynote for 10th Annual College of Engineering Welcome Event
Mark Wyatt, a 1980 NC State computer science alumnus and vice president of smart grid and energy systems at Duke Energy, delivered the keynote address for the NC State College of Engineering's 10th Annual Welcome event on Thursday, August 19 at 4:30 p.m. at The McKimmon Center. more
Venezuelan Summer Practicum Returns for Fourth Year
For the fourth year in a row, the NC State Computer Science Department hosted a team of 18 undergraduate students from the Universidad Católica Andres Bello (UCAB), Caracas Venezuela, for a two-week summer practicum. more

In their tireless efforts to bring the latest technologies to their post-Millennial clients, the libraries have released an innovative tool called Wolfwalk that makes it easy to explore the NC State campus and its history. WolfWalk capitalizes on the location awareness of today’s mobile devices to allow users to give themselves a self-guided historical walk. more
Race to the Top
NC State played a key role in securing $400 million in education funding for the state of North Carolina through the federal Race to the Top program, including plans for a statewide transition to a cloud computer/support services infrastructure. more

As the leader of the only university with a presence in all 100 North Carolina counties, NC State chancellor Dr. Randy Woodson – along with his wife, Susan – hit the road this summer to gain a firsthand look at how NC State makes a difference from the mountains to the sea. more

Departmental Gifts & Research
Microsoft has donated $20,000 to the department in support of Dr. Bob Fornaro and the Sr. Design Center Program.
The NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors has donated $6,000 to the department in support of the Sr. Design Center Program and other CoE programs.
Thomson Reuters has donated $5,000 to the department in support of the Sr. Design Center Program.
First Citizens Bank has donated $2,500 to the department in sponsorship of the “Connected” Alumni Newsletter, and in support of the ePartners Program.
Alumnus, Earl Hines (B.S. ’91) has donated $3,000 in support of the Joyce Hatch Scholarship Endowment.
NVIDIA has donated a Tesla™ C2050 Computing Processor to the department, which will be used to support the teaching and research efforts of Dr. Frank Mueller.
Dr. Peng Ning has been awarded $499,064 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal titled “Defending Against Insider Jammers in DSSS – and FH-Based Wireless Communication Systems.” more
Faculty / Staff News
Dr. Zhe Zhang has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor starting this fall. He is currently a Research Staff Member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and his research interests are focused on distributed computing systems.
Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Heckman and her husband, Walt, on the birth of their first child, Fiona, born on August 24th. Mom, dad, and baby girl are doing well!
