Researchers Tackle Issues Surrounding Security Tools for Software Developers

For software programmers, security tools are analytic software that can scan or run their code to expose vulnerabilities long before the software goes to market. But these tools can have shortcomings, and programmers don’t always use them. New research from National Science Foundation-funded computer science researcher Emerson Murphy-Hill and his colleagues tackles three different aspects of the issue. more

Reeves Promoted to Associate Dean for COE Graduate Programs

Dr. Douglas ReevesDr. John Gilligan, Executive Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at NC State, recently announced that Dr. Douglas S. Reeves (pictured at right), professor in the Department of Computer Science and Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering at NC State University, has been promoted to Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering, effective immediately. Reeves has served as Assistant Dean since Fall of 2013. more

ePartners Career Connection Scheduled for September 28th

On Monday, September 28th, the NC State Department of Computer Science will host its annual ePartners Career Connection event, 12-4 pm. With a record 37 companies participating, recruiting companies will be located in both the Hunt Library's Duke Energy Halls A,B & C, as well as in Rooms 3001 & 3002 in Engineering Building 2. This recruiting and networking fair is provided exclusively for the benefit of computer science students and the department’s most valued corporate partners. more

Harrelson Hall: Reclaimed

After more than a half century of standing as a round peg in the square hole of NC State’s University Plaza, Harrelson Hall is finally being sent to the circular file. Over the coming year much of the building will be rolled up, recycled and reused before the final skeleton is ultimately removed next summer. Plans are to use at least 90 percent of reclaimed nonhazardous materials for other purposes! more

Throw a Fast Pitch at Entrepalooza

The NC State Entrepreneurship Initiative is hosting the inaugural Entrepalooza entrepreneurship and innovation festival from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Oval on Centennial Campus. Entrepalooza will give students a chance to learn about the wide variety of entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities at NC State. An Innovation Lab will present live demonstrations of NC State innovations, and attendees can enjoy games, prizes and free food during the festival. more

MLK Dream Resounds in Historic Audio

For years, Rocky Mount citizens have told tales about hearing the first rendition of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. On Nov. 27, 1962, nine months before the refrain echoed across the National Mall during the March on Washington, the words rang out in a segregated high school gymnasium in the small North Carolina town. In a 55-minute address to a packed house of 1,800 local residents, King delivered — for the first time — phrases that would ultimately inspire millions. Five decades later, that remarkable speech has a new, vastly larger audience. NC State English professor Jason Miller, who discovered an audio tape of the Rocky Mount speech in 2013, is making the restored recording available to the public on a website this fall. He played portions of the tape at an event Aug. 11 at the Hunt Library. more

Record-Breaking Giving Shows Donors Bullish on NC State

In challenging economic times, public universities need the help of alumni and friends more than ever. NC State’s supporters are meeting this challenge with an awe-inspiring level of enthusiasm. In fact, they’re downright bullish on the university, boosting charitable giving for scholarships, research, academic programs and faculty support to an all-time high. In the 2014-15 fiscal year that ended June 30, NC State received gifts and pledges totaling a record $208.5 million, an 11 percent increase over the previous year, and a remarkable 133-percent increase since Chancellor Randy Woodson took the helm in 2010. more

LexisNexis has donated $60,000 in the form of an unrestricted research grant in support of the department and Dr. Tim Menzies.

Microsoft has donated $30,000 in the form of an unrestricted Microsoft Research Award in support of the department and Dr. Rada Chirkova.

Fidelity Investments has donated $30,000 in support of the ePartners Program and the Senior Design Center.

EMC has donated $15,000 in support of the ePartners Program and the Senior Design Center.

NetApp has donated $15,000 in support of the ePartners Program and the Senior Design Center.

Riverbed Technology has donated $7,500 in support of the ePartners Program.

Credit Suisse has donated $7,500 in support of the ePartners Program.

Eastman Chemical has donated $5,000 in support of the ePartners Program.

Vanguard has donated $5,000 in support of the ePartners Program.

XLOC has donated $2,500 in support of the ePartners Program.

Dr. Xiaohui (Helen) Gu has been awarded $800,000 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support her research proposal entitled “CSR: Medium: Collaborative Research: Holistic, Cross-site, Hybrid System Anomaly Debugging for Large Scale Hosting Infrastructures.” This project is in collaboration with Dr. Shan Lu, associate professor of computer science at the University of Chicago. NC State is the lead institution, and its share is $518,000. more

Join us in welcoming Lauren Williamson to the Computer Science Department team. Lauren's job duties will include post-award administration, some pre-award functions, and assisting with administrative duties. Lauren has held previous positions at UNC-G and UNC-CH.

Lee Ann Clark will be leaving the department and her position in ITNG to begin a new career as a fulltime Grandmother effective August 31st! Please join us in thanking Lee Ann for her service to the department, college and NC State University.

The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
