Perros Honored as IEEE Fellow for Achievements in Networking
Dr. Harry Perros, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor of computer science at NC State, has been named an IEEE Fellow for his work in performance evaluation modeling of computer networks. He becomes the department’s 5th IEEE Fellow. more
Mentored Team Takes Second Place in Siemens Competition
Co-mentored by Dr. Nagiza Samatova, associate professor of computer science, the team of Neil Shah and Yekaterina “Katie” Shpanskaya recently won second-place for their team research project in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the nation’s premier high school science competition. The team will share a $50,000 scholarship. more
PhD Student Makes ‘History’ with Acclaimed Time-Travel Game
Chris Hazard’s (pictured at right) groundbreaking video game, Achron, has gamers buzzing. It utilizes time travel technology, allowing players to change things in the past that propagate into the future in significant ways…something that has never been done in a game before. more
120 Receive Degrees in Fall Diploma Ceremonys
The NC State Department of Computer Science conferred 120 degrees during the Fall Diploma Ceremony on December 19, 2009, including two significant "firsts" for the department. Garrett Sewell is the first student to graduate in the computer science game development concentration and Dr. Sarah Heckman, who received her Ph.D. during the ceremony, officially became the department's first Teaching Assistant Professor. Suzanne Gordon (B.S. ’75, M.S. ‘80), VP, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at SAS Institute, served as keynote speaker. more
Spring Slate Announced for Fidelity Investments Speakers Series
The Department of Computer Science at NC State University is very pleased to announce an exciting and engaging slate of speakers for the Spring 2010 semester for the Fidelity Investments “Leadership in Technology” Executive Speakers Series. Keith Collins (pictured at right), Sr. VP & CTO at SAS Institute Topic will kick-off the spring slate on January 28th at 6 pm in 1231 EB2 with a talk entitied, "How do you Respond to a Data Tsunami?" more

Tekelec has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.
Duke Energy has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.
CleanBit Systems has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center.
BCBS of NC has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.
Kathy Markham has donated $1,500 in support of the Diversity in Computer Science Endowment.
Dr. Peng Ning has been selected to receive a 2010 IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award valued at $100,000. more
Drs. Peng Ning, Xuxian Jiang and Mladen Vouk have been awarded $1,523,686 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their research proposal titled “Collaborative Research: Trustworthy Cloud Computing.” more
Drs. Peng Ning and R. Michael Young have been awarded $979,463 by the Army Research Office/Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (ARO MURI) to support their research proposal titled “Computer-aided Human Centric Cyber Situation Awareness.” more
Dr. Munindar Singh has been awarded $669,029 by Penn State University (Army Research Laboratory) to support his research proposal titled “Quality of Information-Aware Networks for Tactical Applications (QUANTA).” more
Dr. Steffen Heber has been awarded $299,420 by the National Science Foundation to support his research proposal titled “Role of Alternative Splicing in Arabidopsis Immune Response.” more
Faculty / Staff News
For the second year in a row, Dr. Tao Xie, assistant professor of computer science at NC State University, has had two research-track papers and two tutorials selected for presentation at the 32nd International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2010), the premier conference in software engineering. The conference takes place May 2-8, 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. more
