143 Receive Degrees in Fall Diploma Ceremony
More than 140 students received their diplomas during the Fall 2010 Diploma Ceremony on December 17th at Hope Community Church. Alumnus Marshall Brain (M.S. ’89), author, TV personality and founder of HowStuffWorks.com delivered the keynote address. more
NC State Designated a NVIDIA CUDA Research Center
NC State has recently been designated a 2010 NVIDIA CUDA Research Center for its pioneering work on GSTREAM, a general-purpose, scalable data-streaming framework on GPUs. more
Grateful Alum Gives Back Via His Will
Computer Science alum Brian Ricker (BS ’92) has always been a fan of the Wolfpack, and is proud to be associated with NC State. So, he decided to honor his ties to State by including a bequest of 10% of his estate to the University in his will. more

Generosity Unrivaled
NC State University has received the largest gift in its history – $40 million – from Lonnie and Carol Johnson Poole. The substantial part of their contribution, $37 million, funds an endowment to support NC State’s College of Management, which is now named The Lonnie C. Poole Jr. College of Management. more

A team of NC State researchers is getting a first-hand look at the science behind Santa Claus’s remarkably efficient Arctic operation this month as visiting scholars at the philanthropist’s North Pole laboratory. more

The prevalence of global positioning system (GPS) devices in everything from cars to cell phones has almost made getting lost a thing of the past. But what do you do when your GPS isn’t working? Researchers from North Carolina State University and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have developed a shoe-embedded radar system that may help you find your way. more
Arden Named NC State University’s Chief Academic Officer
Dr. Warwick A. Arden has been named provost and executive vice chancellor at North Carolina State University. As the university’s chief academic officer, the provost oversees the policies and priorities that create and sustain educational excellence across the university’s broad spectrum of academic and student affairs. The provost’s responsibilities include leading academic strategic planning and resource allocation, and overseeing academic personnel matters including faculty recruitment, hiring, retention, performance, promotion, and tenure. more

From animal surgery to university administration, Dr. Warwick Arden’s career has taken some interesting turns. Arden, named the university’s chief academic officer Dec. 3 after 18 months as interim provost, sat down recently wih the Bulletin to talk about what’s next and what he’s learned along the way. more
Departmental Gifts & Research
Alumnus Bobby R. Johnson, Jr., (B.S. CSC ‘77) and his wife Donna, have donated $50,000 in support of NC State’s Entrepreneurship Initiative and a variety of scholarships and strategic programs within the department.
NVIDIA has donated $10,000 in matching funds to support a teaching assistant, as part of the CUDA Teaching Center award established at NC State under the direction of Dr. Frank Mueller. They also made an equipment donation valued at over $3,000 to support Dr. Mueller’s curricular development activities.
Teradata has donated $7,500 to the department in support of the Sr Design Center and the ePartners Program.
McKesson Technology Solutions has donated $2,500 to the department in support of the ePartners Program.
Tekelec has donated $25,000 to the department in support of the Sr Design Center and the ePartners Program.
The RTP Chapter of the Society for Information Management has donated $10,000 to the department to add to the NC-SIM Scholarship Endowment.
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has donated $5,000 to the department in support of the Sr Design Center.
Sam & Deb Averitt have donated $1,000 in unrestricted support of the department in honor of the leadership of Dr. Mladen Vouk.
Dr. Injong Rhee has received a Google Research Award totaling $65,532. The award will support his research proposal titled “Experimental Evaluation of Increasing TCP Initial Congestion Window.” more
Dr. Tao Xie has has been awarded $124,999 by the University of Texas Arlington via NIST to support his research proposal titled “Fault Localization Based on Combinatorial Testing.” more
Faculty / Staff News
Congratulations to Dr. George Rouskas, who attended IEEE Globecom in Miami recently where he co-chaired the Optical Network and Systems (ONS) symposium, and was honored with an Outstanding Service Award at the conference.
Join us in welcoming Ms. Krisztina (Kriszti) Hovanyi to the department as our new Assistant Contract Manager. Kriszti comes to us from the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, & Counselor Education in the College of Education and has been with the NC State University for 7 years.
The department also welcomes Ms. Terri Martin-Moss as the newest member of our finance staff. She will provide support for the accounting and temporary human resource/payroll functions of our department. Terri comes to us with over 15 years of experience in accounting and human resources (holding both administrative and management positions) in the private sector and will be a great addition to our staff.
