188 Receive Degrees in Fall Diploma Ceremony
The NC State Department of Computer Science conferred 188 degrees during the Fall Diploma Ceremony on December 14, 2012. Over 1,000 relatives and guests celebrated with our graduates, faculty and staff during our ceremony held at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh. Computer science department alumna LTC Tanya Markow delivered the keynote address. more
Bouterse and Perros Win Best Paper Award at CloudNet 2012
Congratulations to PhD student Brian Bouterse,and Dr. Harry Perros, professor of computer science in the NC State Department of Computer Science, for winning the Best Paper Award at the First IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet 2012) held in Universite Pierre Et Marie Curie, Paris on November 28-30, 2012. more
NC State Defeats UNC in Call of Duty: Black Ops II Rivalries Competition
In an exciting match, the team from NC State pulled out a dramatic last-second win in game 7 over their rivals from UNC, and won $12,000 in high-end NVIDIA gaming equipment for the department! The team is heading to the finals in Silicon Valley in January! more
Sreepathi Receives Gold Award in ACM Graduate Research Competition
Congratulations to NC State Computer Science PhD student Sarat Sreepathi for winning the Gold Award at the ACM Graduate Student Research Competition at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC 2012) held in Salt Lake City, UT on November 10-16, 2012. more
Best Paper Award Presented at ICIDS 2012
Congratulations to PhD students Matthew Fendt, Brent Harrison, Stephen Ware, and Rogelio Cardona-Rivera; and Dr. David Roberts, assistant professor of computer science in the NC State Department of Computer Science, for winning the Best Paper Award at the Fifth International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling (ICIDS 2012) held in San Sebastian, Spain on November 12-15, 2012. more

Work to Begin on Traffic Gates
NC State Transportation is moving ahead with its plan to install a pair of gates at the railroad tracks along Dan Allen Drive. Construction is expected to be completed by Jan. 7, with the gates operational by Jan. 14, says Tom Kendig, director of transportation. more
Making Home Solar Energy Systems Easier, Less Expensive
A new grant to North Carolina State University and several partners could make installing rooftop solar energy systems much less expensive and time consuming. Researchers will use the five-year, $9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to design solar energy systems and installation and connection procedures that require little or no customization by homeowners and installers. The systems would set up quickly and connect to the power grid easily, while still meeting building and electrical codes. more
World Class
With the grand opening of the Hunt Library on Centennial Campus, the future is now at NC State. The new library, one of the most advanced in the world, opened Jan. 2 after more than five years of construction. The Hunt turns the traditional library on its head, giving NC State students, faculty and staff a state-of-the-art space for learning, research, collaboration and more. more

Departmental Gifts & Research
Mark Wyatt (B.S. CSC ’80) has made a stock gift to the department valued at approximately $50,000 to fund the early launch of the planned Mark and Robin Wyatt Scholarship Endowment. more info
EMC has donated $50,000 in support of the department’s Sr. Design Center and ePartners Program.
NVIDIA has donated 18 GeForce GTX480 GPUs and one TESLA K20 (valued at more than $6,300) to the department for use by Dr. Frank Mueller in support of his research and teaching efforts on parallel computing.
Iron Data has donated $6,250 in support of the department’s Sr. Design Center and ePartners Program.
Bronto Software has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Sr. Design Center.
McKesson Corporation has provided a supplemental ePartners donation of $2,500 in sponsorship of the NC State “Capture the Flag” Challenge.
Mrs. Ling Tai has donated $2,000 to the KC Tai Memorial Endowment fund.
Dr. Frank Mueller has been awarded $666,666 by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (US Air Force) to support his research proposal titled “Co-Design of Hardware/Software for Predicting MAV Aerodynamics.” more
Dr. Munindar Singh has been awarded $55,000 by Xerox Corporation to support his research proposal titled “Social Computing and Community Engagement for Collaborative Service Marketplace.” more
CSC Wolf Bytes
Congratulations to Thomas Silloway (B.S. CSC ’08), a game developer with Psyonix Studios in San Diego, CA, on the release of ARC Squadron, the studio’s first iOS game. Thomas worked on this game for about 8 months on gameplay programming (including weapons, bosses and enemies), UI features and the overall design polish and gameplay experience. The department welcomes Marquya Crawford as a fulltime member of our research administration staff. She will provide post award support for the ITNG Center research projects, where she has been working in a temporary capacity since October.
