Department Confers Over 200 Degrees During Fall Diploma Ceremony

Dec 2014 GraduatesCongratulations Class of 2014! Over 200 computer science graduates were recognized during the Fall 2014 Diploma Ceremony on December 17th, at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh. This was one of the largest graduating classes in department history. More than 1,000 relatives, friends, and guests were able to celebrate with the graduates on-site, while, thanks to Providence’s live streaming capabilities, another 800 guests from as far away as India, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and France were able to be a part of the celebration, as well. The top employers for this semester’s graduates include Amazon, Cisco, Citrix Systems, Fidelity Investments, NetApp, SAS, and VMware. Wayne Clark, technology icon with more than four decades of meaningful contributions to the fields of computer science and networking, served as keynote speaker. more

Perros and Anjum Release New Book

Congratulations to Dr. Harry Perros, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor of omputer science at NC State, and his former student, Dr. Bushra Anjum, Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology, for having their book entitled “Bandwidth Allocation for Video Under Quality of Service Constraints” published by Wiley. more

Please join us on January 29, 2015 at 6 pm in room 1231 in EB2 for our first Spring 2015 as our special guest speaker will be Andy Hunt, programmer turned consultant, author and publisher. Andy has authored award-winning and best-selling books, including The Pragmatic Programmer and seven others, including his latest, Learn to Program with Minecraft Plugins and the popular Pragmatic Thinking and Learning. His topic will be “It's All In Your Head: Thinking, Programming, and Inventing in the 21st Century. more

New Parking Machine Options in January

Visitors to campus now have new parking options. New “Pay-By-Space” lots with payment machines, similar to those currently used by the City of Raleigh on Hillsborough Street, will give campus visitors multiple options to pay for short-term parking, including a mobile application that will allow a driver to add more time to their parking session from a remote location. The new machines will cover 40 spaces in the West Lot on main campus, 72 spaces in the South Capability Lot and 86 spaces in the Poulton Deck across the street from the Hunt Library, with additional lots and spaces to be added next year. more

First-Year Class Boasts Highest Percentage of Female Engineers

Female Engineering FreshmanNC State’s 2014 first-year engineering class(which includes computer science) includes the highest percentage of female students in university history — nearly 25 percent — which is an increase from 18 percent five years ago and 14 percent 10 years ago. In addition to having the most female students, the incoming first-year class is also the largest and most accomplished engineering class in NC State’s history. The class’ average math and critical reading SAT score is more than 1300 and the average ACT score is above 30! more

Results: Big Data and More

The fall issue of Results, NC State’s biannual research magazine, highlights some of the university’s most promising work, from the use of data analytics to solve challenges in business, medicine and national security to groundbreaking efforts to unmask a pathogen that mimics diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. more

NC State Innovation Lights Amsterdam’s Rainbow Station

Amsterdam’s Rainbow StationIf you’re passing through the Amsterdam Central train station you may be pleasantly surprised to see a vibrant rainbow projected on the large arch that spans over its platforms. It’s the “Rainbow Station” project by artist Daan Roosegaarde – and it was made possible by technology adapted specifically for the project through collaboration with NC State researcher Michael Escuti and ImagineOptix Corporation, the company he founded to pioneer patterned liquid crystal optic technologies. more

Departmental Gifts & Research

LexisNexis has made a $50,000 unrestricted gift to support Dr. Tim Menzies’ research of general methods for augmenting the compilers of big data scripts with recommender systems that can critique and improve these scripts, using HPCC Systems and ECL. LexisNexis has also donated $10,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center, and ePartners Program.

Merck has donated $37,500 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center, and ePartners Program, becoming the department’s latest Super ePartner.

Oracle has donated $35,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center and ePartners Program.

Cisco Systems has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center, and ePartners Program for programs during the 2015-16 academic year.

Fujitsu Transaction Solutions has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center Program.

N.C. Information Technology Services has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center Program.

VMware has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Ipreo has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center Program.

Farragut Systems has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Northrop Grumman has donated $25,000 in support of Dr. Rada Chirkova's CHMPR/NCSU STEED Initiative and $1,000 in support of the department’s Women in Computer Science Program, as part of a larger $6,000 gift to the College of Engineering.

IBM has donated $40,000 in support of John Streck and his efforts in the Institute for NEXT Generation IT Systems.

Dr. Donald Bitzer, Distinguished University Research Professor, and his wife - Maryann, have made an $18,000 donation to expand the Bitzer Undergraduate Research Endowment.

Gerhard Pilcher (B.S. CSC ’85, M.S. Analytics ‘11) and his wife – Denise Carlisle (B.A. CHASS ‘89), have donated $25,000 to establish the Henry B. Rowe Jr. Computer Science Scholarship Endowment.

Mark Wyatt (B.S. CSC ’80) and his wife Robin, have donated a stock gift of approximately $15,000 to expand the Mark and Robin Wyatt Scholarship Endowment.

Mrs. Ling Tai has donated $2,500 to the KC Tai Memorial Endowment fund.

Frank “Andy” Smith has donated $1,000 to the Carol Miller Endowment Fund.

Dr. James Lester, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for Educational Informatics and Dr. Roger Azevedo, Professor of Psychology, have been awarded $1,365,603 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their research proposal entitled “The Effectiveness of Intelligent Virtual Humans in Facilitating Self-Regulated Learning in STEM with MetaTutor.”” more

The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
