Wolfpack OKs Tar Heel Truce
NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill will collaborate to help tackle some of the state’s toughest challenges, Chancellor Randy Woodson said in a message to campus this month. The commitment to work as a team came after trustees from both schools held a joint meeting last month, essentially agreeing to limit their historical rivalry to athletics. Among the three areas Woodson identified for research collaboration between the two institutions - Data Science: Efforts to effectively and efficiently manage the staggering amount of “big data” available to solve problems. more
Tradition and Trans Fat Nation
It’s all over but the sugar high for the 8,000 runners who participated in this year’s Krispy Kreme Challenge. But the news that they collectively raised a record-breaking $177,000 for UNC Children’s Hospital should take the edge off the inevitable sugar crash that comes from wolfing down 2,400 calories in the middle of a five-mile run. more
Using Technology to Influence Social Change
"Field of Dreams", a popular movie in the late 1980’s, coined the phrase “If you build it, they will come,” meaning that people don’t realize they want or need something until it is right in front of them. Today’s most relevant way to build a field of dreams is to integrate technology into subject matter, which is just what NC State computer science students Khalia Braswell and KaMar Galloway have done. Their collaboration with Dr. Fay Cobb Payton on a critical healthcare outreach effort is changing mindsets, increasing communication and bringing people together to talk like never before. more
NC State Leads Summit on Economic Development
Leaders from across the nation in business, higher education and the public sector converged on North Carolina State University Tuesday for a critical summit to discuss how universities impact job growth and economic development. The event, “Transforming Economies: The Role of University Innovation in Economic Growth,” was hosted by NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson, who said universities need to find new ways to leverage their research findings to spur job creation and economic development. “Every year NC State generates $1.7 billion in direct economic impact,” said Woodson, noting that the university pumps $8 back into the economy for every $1 received in state funding. “The importance of collaboration across disciplines within the university and across industry sectors outside the university is key to creating partnerships that will drive the economy.” more
