Savage Named AMS Secretary
Congratulations to Dr. Carla D. Savage, professor of computer science in the NC State Computer Science Department, for being named Secretary of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), effective February 1, 2013. In the years since the Society was formed in 1888, there have only been nine secretaries; Savage becomes the tenth. more
Sessoms and Anyanwu Ogan Receive Best Paper Award
Congratulations to Matthew Sessoms, a recent Masters Degree graduate in the NC State Computer Science department, and Dr. Kemafor Anyanwu Ogan, assistant professor of computer science, for winning the Best Paper Award at the Joint International Semantic Technology Conference (JIST) held in Nara, Japan on December 2-4, 2012. more

Boyce to Present at Carolina Games Summit
Acey Boyce, a PhD student in the NC State Department of Computer Science, and a number of faculty will serve as featured presenters on February 2nd at the Carolina Games Summit, an event which is held annually at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC. The event unites game developers, game educators, and game players, and features video game tournaments, industry speakers, educational sessions, and exhibition booths. more
Jauhari Receives SAS Graduate Industrial Traineeship
Congratulations to Sagar Jauhari, a Master’s student in the NC State Computer Science department, on receiving a Graduate Industrial Traineeship (GIT) valued at $50,980 from SAS Institute. more
Fidelity Investments Speakers Series Presents Brian Hamilton
Please join us on February 21st at 6 pm in Lecture Hall 1231 EBII for our next spring 2013 talk in the Fidelity Investments “Leadership in Technology” Executive Speakers Series. Our special guest speaker will be Brian Hamilton, Co-founder & Chairman of Sageworks. His talk topic will be “Building a Business on Artificial Intelligence." The talk is free and open to the public. more
New Nods for Online Degrees, Best Value
NC State received high marks for several of its online degree programs and was again recognized as a national best value in higher education. Among the accolades, the U.S. News & World Report ranked NC State 7th in the nation for online graduate programs in engineering and 9th in the nation for online graduate programs in computer information technology. more
College Celebrates 2012 Distinguished Alumni
The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University has named the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award winners for 2012. The recipients are Stephen F. Angel, chairman, president and chief executive officer at Praxair, Inc.; Jimmy D. Clark, owner and president of Guy M. Turner, Inc.; and Dr. John A. Edmond, director of advanced optoelectronics at Cree, Inc. The awards were presented by Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering, at a banquet held Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Park Alumni Center on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The award honors alumni whose accomplishments further their field and reflect favorably on the university. more
Moving North Carolina Forward
Anita Brown-Graham is upbeat, peppy—and for good reason. The director of the Institute for Emerging Issues and her team just relocated to a newer and larger space in the James B. Hunt Jr. Library. Their beautiful new headquarters includes an auditorium, media and quiet rooms and a spectacular view. The centerpiece is the Emerging Issues Commons, an interactive exhibit about North Carolina that serves as a collaborative working and learning space, available to anyone for free. more
Hallowed Places
The tower at the heart of victory celebrations. The brick plaza where causes are advanced, relationships rebooted and lunches inhaled. The quiet courtyard or forest that offers a respite from a bustling campus. These are NC State’s hallowed places. “Over time, these places have accrued special meaning,” according to the NC State physical master plan. “This unique designation is awarded only to those buildings and places to which people have created lasting bonds over generations.” See the photo gallery here! more
Departmental Gifts & Research
Rachel Goldstein has donated a vintage circa 1983 Sage IV computer, Liberty "Freedom 100" Monitor, keyboard, & related product documentation to the department for display in our History of Computing collection in EB2.
Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, Werum Software, and I-Cubed have each donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Sr. Design Center.
Dr. Frank Mueller has been awarded $60,000 by Oak Ridge National Laboratories – UT-Battelle LLC (US Dept. of Energy (DOE) to support his research proposal titled “Application Skelleton Generation for Exascale HPC (previous title: Application Skelleton Generation for Exascale HPC Simulation).” more

The department welcomes Wei-Ling Chou as Assistant Financial Manager. She has been serving in a temporary capacity since August.
