Friday Institute to Partner on $12M Cybersecurity Apprenticeship

US Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta announced a new four-year $12M grant in early July focused on creating cybersecurity apprenticeships to help fill a growing need for cybersecurity professionals. The program, called Purdue’s Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program (P-CAP), will be led by Purdue University in partnership with NC State University’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, which will direct the associated research and evaluation of the program. more

DH Hill Library Renovations Take Shape

Construction at D.H. Hill Jr. Library means more than just an aesthetic update — changes will also support the overall success of the campus community. The most noticeable change will be the new Academic Success Center. The new Libraries spaces include the Innovation Studio, an enlarged and upgraded Visualization Studio, and a new Data Experience Lab. more

NC State University and New Belgium Brewing Craft New Partnership

NC State University has announced an agreement with New Belgium Brewing Company that will provide annual support to student-success initiatives and research projects and help further develop the fermentation science program at the university. As part of the agreement, New Belgium has been granted licensing rights to brew Old Tuffy Premium Lager, which will be available in retail outlets throughout North Carolina beginning in August. more

Data Matters Courses

Data Matters (Aug. 12-16 at Hunt Library) is a week-long series of one and two-day courses aimed at students and professionals in business, research, and government. The short course series is sponsored by the National Consortium for Data Science in collaboration with NC State University, RENCI and the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at UNC-Chapel Hill. Data Matters gives students the chance to learn about a wide range of topics in data science, analytics, visualization, curation, and more from expert instructors. Facebook has donated $50,000 to the department in the form of an unrestricted grant to support Dr. Tim Menzies’ research efforts related to probabilistic programming and the r.a.i.s.e. lab.

Caterpillar has donated $10,000 to the department in support of Dr. Ben Watson’s research project – ‘Design Research for Augmented Reality Applications to Caterpillar Vehicles’. This course project will investigate two applications of augmented reality to Caterpillar vehicles: an augmented dashboard that can flexibly change appearance to suit current needs, and a transparent bucket that lets operators see through it, to improve safety and productivity.

Sony has donated $150,000 to the department in support of Dr. Muhammad Shahzad’s research project – ‘Accurate Position Tracking Through Smart Fusion of Inertial Sensors with Ambient WiFi’. In this project, we propose to perform indoor position tracking using inertial sensors that are already built into most commodity handheld and wearable devices. We plan to improve the accuracy of the position tracking by leveraging the ambient WiFI signals already present in most modern buildings.

Dr. Noburo Matsuda has been awarded $1,399,947 by the US Department of Education (DED) to support his research proposal entitled “Developing an Online Environment for Learning Algebra by Teaching a Synthetic Peer.” more

Dr. Anupam Das has been awarded $174,995 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “CRII: SaTC: Analyzing Information Leak in Smart Homes.” more

Dr. Bradley Reaves has been awarded $174,999 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “CRII: SaTC: Techniques for Measuring and Characterizing Robocalls.” more

CSC Wolf Bytes

We bid a fond farewell to Dr. Blair Sullivan, Associate Professor of Computer Science, who leaves us for a faculty position at the University of Utah. She was a member of the Data-Driven Science (DDS) cluster of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program (CFEP) and held a Joint Faculty Appointment with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She was recently named one of 14 Moore Investigators in Data-Driven Discovery (a 5-year, $1.5 million award), and has been recognized as a National Consortium for Data Science Data Fellow. She made a significant contribution to the success of the department in her six years here and she will be greatly missed. We wish her the very best in her new role.

Congrats to CSC alum, KaMar Galloway, who was recently named by the National Academy Foundation (NAF) as a 2019 Young Alumni Winner for his continued work in the computer science education space!

If you are a CSC student or recent graduate (within 12 months post-graduation) and would like to receive email notifications when new jobs are posted on ePack matching your profile, you can set up your own customized job search agent to receive just the postings you desire (intern vs. full time, etc). For a short video tutorial on how to create your own personalized job agent, click here.

The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
