Boyer, NC State Receive Google Computer Science Capacity Award

Dr. Kristy BoyerDr. Kristy Boyer and others in the NC State Computer Science Department are collaborating with researchers at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill as part of the Research Triangle Peer Teaching Fellows, a project supported by a Google Computer Science Capacity Award. At NC State, research will focus on how collaborative dialogue unfolds as students are learning computer science, using some of the substantial resources provided by Google to better prepare teaching assistants, as Peer Teaching Fellows, for CSC 216 (Programming Concepts-Java). NC State’s portion of the award for the first year will be approximately $208,000. more

Leeman-Munk Receives SAS Summer Text Analytics Fellowship

Former Chancellor Bruce Poulton Dies

Former Chancellor Bruce PoultonA local newspaper columnist wrote of his first invitation to the chancellor’s box at Carter-Finley Stadium, where he observed a loud fan vehemently disagreeing with an official’s call. The writer mentioned to the guest next to him that the fan needed to calm down before he was asked to leave by the chancellor. “What do you mean?” the other guest said. “That is the chancellor.” The energetic leader responsible for the development of Centennial Campus and the growth of public-private partnerships at NC State, has died in Raleigh. The university remembers Bruce Poulton. more

New Graduate Career Services Director & Suite

We are excited to announce that we are in the process of hiring a Director of Graduate Career Services to work closely with industry partners to identify internship and career opportunities, and to serve as development mentor of professional skills for our 700+ CSC graduate students. We are also investing ~$150,000 in the construction of a new CSC Graduate Career Services Suite in EB2 that will contain two high-tech interview rooms (with HD monitors and video capabilities to allow for remote interviews) and a drop-in office for the exclusive use of our industry partners. Of course, ePartners and Super ePartners will have priority access to this new facility. This in no way replaces the services provided by the University's Career Development Center; rather we will work closely with them to supplement their capabilities in a coordinated fashion. We are using premium MS program tuition to provide this enhanced service for our graduate students. We hope to have everything in place as early as this fall. We will be sharing more as the construction progresses.

Rebar Named New Research Chief

Dr. Alan RebarDr. Alan Rebar, senior associate vice president for research, executive director of Discovery Park and professor of clinical pathology at Purdue University, has been named vice chancellor for research, innovation and economic development at North Carolina State University, effective on or before Sept. 14. CSC department head, Dr. Mladen Vouk has been filling the role in an acting capacity during the search period. more

Visitor Parking Changes

Effective Wednesday, July 1, visitor parking permits will no longer be sold at Visitor Information Booths on Centennial Campus or Main Campus. NC State Transportation is making this operational change since other visitor parking payment options are in place to accommodate visitor parking. Visitors have the option of using pay lots and pay-by-space parking in locations on both campuses. On Centennial Campus, parking options for guests include the pay lot at Partners Way (credit card in and out), and the pay-by-space locations on the top level of the Poulton Parking Deck and in the Capability Drive lot. Pay-by-space offers visitors the added convenience of paying for parking via smartphone plus the ability to extend parking time. Payment can be made by credit card or Paypal (0.32 convenience fee). Transportation staff at the visitor booths will continue to provide parking information to campus visitors. Please note that the Centennial Campus info booth is only staffed until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A Look Inside Reynolds Renovations

Reynolds Coliseum floorThere have been a few surprises. Nothing completely out of the ordinary, of course, though the decades-old box of uneaten peanuts kind of threw the contractors off for a few seconds. Three months into the first major renovation of Reynolds Coliseum since it opened in 1949, everything is on schedule. Ductwork in the hallways of the upper concourse has been removed, prepping for the first permanent air-conditioning system the old building has ever had. more

Smart Insulin Patch Could Replace Painful Injections for Diabetes

Painful insulin injections could become a thing of the past for the millions of Americans who suffer from diabetes, thanks to a new invention from researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who have created the first “smart insulin patch.” Though it has thus far only been tested in an animal model, the patch has been shown to detect increases in blood sugar levels and secrete doses of insulin into the bloodstream whenever needed. more

Microsoft has awarded a Microsoft Research Award in the amount of $6,500 to Dr. Tiffany Barnes in support of her “Understanding the use of Minecraft for teaching programming to K12 students” project..

Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, Dr. James Lester, along with Drs. Bradford Mott and Jonathan Rowe, in the NC State Center for Educational Informatics, have been awarded $1,072,237 by the US Army Research Laboratory to support their research project entitled “Tutorial Planning with Markov Decision Processes for Counterinsurgency Training Environments.” more

It is with much regret that we announce that Dr. Kristy Boyer will be leaving us to join the University of Florida starting in Fall 2015. With the move, Kristy will be moving closer to her family and joining a growing research community at the University of Florida. Kristy has had a wonderful start to her career in our department, recently getting a CAREER award, having many significant research results, mentoring students, and being a vibrant role model for women in our department. She will be greatly missed. The department wishes her the very best in this career move.

If you are a CSC student or recent graduate (within 12 months post-graduation) and would like to receive email notifications when new jobs are posted on ePack matching your profile, you can set up your own customized job search agent to receive just the postings you desire (intern vs. full time, etc). The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
