Smiths Establish Scholarship Endowment
The Department of Computer Science (CSC) is pleased to announce that CSC alumna, Strategic Advisory Board vice-chair, and CSC Alumni Hall of Fame member Beth Smith (BS CSC ‘87) and her husband Joey, have made a generous donation to establish the Beth and Joey Smith Scholarship in Computer Science endowment. The endowment will provide scholarships to first-year students or transfer students from targeted counties in eastern North Carolina, and/or students who are current or former 4-H participants. Rouskas Recognized for Optical Network Research
Congratulations to Dr. George Rouskas, former Director of Graduate Programs and Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor of Computer Science at NC State, on being awarded the 2023 Outstanding Technical Achievement Award by the Optical Networking Technical Committee (ONTC) of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc)! The Outstanding Technical Achievement Award is a prestigious, annual award for lifetime contributions to optical networking. Rouskas is being recognized for his “pioneering research in the design, implementation, operation, and control of fiber optic networks”. Read More »
Six NFR Strategies to Improve Software Performance and Security
Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are important aspects of a software system, but are often overlooked by developers because they’re not the aspects of a program that users interact with directly. A new study, co-authored by Wesley K. G. Assunção, delves into how developers approach the crafting of NFRs and outlines six best practices for addressing NFRs that can help to ensure a program’s security and performance in the near and long term. Ken Tate to Retire After 23 Years of Service
Ken Tate, Director of Engagement & External Relations, has announced his retirement at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. Tate joined the department of computer science in 2001 after a successful career as a senior leader at Nortel Networks. Over the past 23 years, Tate solidified his position as an iconic figure in department history, making an indelible mark on the success and upward trajectory of the department. Read More »
Select Departmental Gifts & Support
The Reynolds American Foundation has donated $1,500 to the department to support the Computer Science Enhancement Endowment-Income fund.
Tony McLean Brown and the Brown Family have donated $250,000 as part of a larger $1M multi-year pledge to support the Tony McLean Brown Graduate Fellowship Enhancement for Computer Science and the Ken Tate Scholarship for Student Success in Computer Science.
NC Farm Bureau Insurance Agency has donated $1,000 in support of the Michael ‘Gray’ Dougherty Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science.
David Smith has donated $1,000 to the department to support the Carol Miller Student Leadership Fund.
Mike & Abbie Dougherty have donated $4,000 to the department to support the Michael "Gray" Dougherty Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science fund.

Bahmani Named One of Stanford’s Top Teachers – CSC alum and recent ‘Rising Star’ awardee, Dr. Amir Bahmani (MS ‘16, PhD ‘17), has been honored with Walter J. Gores Award, the highest distinction in teaching at Stanford University. Bahmari is a lecturer in computational biology and genetics and the Director of the Stanford Deep Data Research Center which drives pioneering advancements in biomedical research. This prestigious award is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his students and his mission to expand the horizons of what's possible in bioinformatics and healthcare technology. Read More »
Park Scholarships Announces the Class of 2028 - The Park Scholarships program at North Carolina State University has named 35 students to its Class of 2028 – the 29th class of Park Scholars. The class includes six (17%) who plan to study Computer Science. Read More »
