Model Finds Optimal Fiber Optic Network Connections 10,000 Times More Quickly
Dr. George Rouskas and other researchers at NC State have designed a fiber optic network model that can find optimal connections 10,000 times more quickly -- problems that used to take days to solve can now be solved in just a few seconds. more
New IBM Cloud Services to Address Education Challenges
Beginning with a collaborative project with NC State in 2002, IBM has been working to make analytics, student labs and research collaboration available to students and researchers through the VCL open source software platform. more
What Gamers Want: Researchers Develop Tool To Predict Player Behavior
Dr. David Roberts and other researchers from NC State are working to make video games more enjoyable by accurately predicting the behavior of players in online role-playing games, and steering players to the parts of the game they enjoy most. more
Xiao Receives Award for Innovative Use of Microsoft Technology
Computer Science doctoral student Xusheng Xiao’s project received the “Best Project Representing an Innovative Use of Microsoft Technology” award at the ACM Student Research Competition at ICSE 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii May 21-28. more
White House Summit on Centennial
Business leaders convened on Centennial Campus on Monday, June 13th to discuss the obstacles and opportunities facing the energy and smart grid industries as part of the White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. The NC State event was one of five breakout sessions staged in the Triangle to coincide with President Obama’s visit to the region. more
Enter the Hacker: New DroidKungFu Malware is Bad News for Androids
There’s new Android malware to worry about: DroidKungFu. Dr. Xuxian Jiang and other computer science researchers at NC State have identified the malware which appears to be able to avoid detection by mobile anti-virus software. more
Woodson on the Budget
The Chancellor provides a very candid update on the state budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, and the very difficult decisions ahead for the leaders at NC State University. more
No Small Job
Big changes were evident on campus this week as the building that housed the NC State bookstore for 50 years was torn down to make way for the renovation of the Talley Student Center. Bookstore staff and inventory moved to the ground floor of Harrelson Hall, where they will remain until the new student center opens in 2014. more
Alumnus Takes Entrepreneurial Spirit to the Web
When other NC State students were preparing for their first job interviews after graduation in December 2003, computer science alum Sherard Griffin ‘03 didn’t have to look far. He planned to be his own boss. After learning some valuable lessons with his first business, the young entreprenuer has launched NoodleShare, an online community in which people can present innovative ideas for businesses or products. more

Anne Schowe has donated $1,000 to the department in support of the Carol Miller Student Leadership Endowment.
Cisco Systems has donated $25,000 to the department in support of the ePartners Program and the Sr. Design Center.
Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill has been selected to receive a Google Research Award in the amount of $61,000 to support his research proposal titled “Fast-Feedback Static Analysis Tools." more
Dr. Xiaohui (Helen) Gu has been selected to receive her second Google Research Award. This award, in the amount of $61,000, will support her research proposal titled “Concurrent Adaptive Resource Scaling for Multi-Tenant Cloud Systems.” This award brings Dr. Gu's Google Research Award total to $111,519. more

Ken Tate, and Drs. Chris Healey, Rob St. Amant and Michael Young have been named founding members of the Hunt Library Technology Advisory Board.
A film crew from the UK visited Dr. Michael Young’s gaming lab earlier this month to film the IC-CRIME system and interview the research team for a segment that will air on a new series on the history of science on the National Geographic channel. Air date TBD; we'll let you know!
