STARS SLC Receives Deborah S. Moore Service Award
NC State’s STARS Student Leadership Corps has been recognized with the Deborah S. Moore Service Award for its work in the community. Many of STARS projects are middle school outreach programs aimed at broadening participation in computer science. more
Department Recognizes 2011 Outstanding Computer Science Seniors
Each year, the NC State College of Engineering recognizes students for their outstanding performance beyond academic achievement with Outstanding Senior Awards. Four Computer Science students - Edward Anderson, Trevor Hardy, Carlyle Licata and Brittany Strachan are the Computer Science Department’s Outstanding Seniors for 2011. Congratulations to these exceptional students! more
Bitzer Creativity Awards Presented to Jones & Kerby
Congratulations to Kellie Jones and Natalie Kerby, students in the department of computer science at NC State University, who have been awarded Donald L. Bitzer Creativity Awards for 2010-2011. Established by Dr. Donald L. Bitzer, Distinguished University Research Professor, and his wife Mary Ann, the Bitzer Creativity Award was created to recognize and encourage creativity in undergraduate computer science students. more
Young Selected to Attend CRA-W Career Mentoring Workshop
Jessica Young, a doctoral student in the NC State Department of Computer Science, has been selected to receive travel support for the CRA-W Career Mentoring Workshop at the Federated Computing Research Conference (FCRC 2011) to be held on June 4-5, 2011 in San Jose, CA. more
Poulos CSC Nominee for Faculty Senior Scholarship Award
Congratulations to Alex Poulos, a senior majoring in computer science at NC State University, for being named the Computer Science Department nominee for the College of Engineering Faculty Senior Scholarship Award. more
Neelakantan Receives Graduate Industrial Traineeship
Congratulations to Aishwarya Neelakantan, a Master’s Degree student in the NC State Computer Science Department, on receiving a Graduate Industrial Traineeship (GIT) at SAS. Through the Traineeship, Neelakantan will provide research and analysis including research, generation, testing, and documentation of operations research software. The value of the Traineeship is over $39,850. more
Department to Participate in World IPv6 Day
On June 8, 2011, the NC State Computer Science Department will participate in World IPv6 Day, a global-scale trial of the new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), sponsored by the Internet Society. IPv6 is a version of Internet Protocol that is designed to succeed version 4, as IPv4 space runs out. On June 8, participants will enable IPv6 on their main services for 24 hours. more

Students aren’t the only ones packing up and moving out this month. In preparation for the Talley Student Center renovation, the bookstore, student organizations and some units in Student Affairs are headed for new locations in Harrelson Hall. more
Department Confers 180 Degrees During Spring Diploma Ceremony
Over 180 students received their diplomas during the Spring 2011 Diploma Ceremony on May 13th. Alumnus Kristopher Tyra (B.S. ’86), Director of User Experience Development at Deutsche Bank Global Technology Inc. delivered the keynote address. more

Departmental Gifts & Research
NCWIT has awarded the Women in Computer Science (WiCS) $500 in seed funding in support of a proposed panel discussion event.
Crumbs Media and Teredata have donated $5,000 each, and Thomson Rueters has donated $10,000 to the department in support of the Senior Design Center.
Dr. Tao Xie has received a 2011 Microsoft Research Software Engineering Innovation Foundation Award to support his research proposal titled “GATE: Game-based Automatic Testing Environment.” Tao collaborated with PI Dr. Sunghun Kim from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The award is valued in total at $35,000 (Dr. Tao's share is $17,500). more
Dr. Kemafor Anyanwu-Ogan has received a Faculty Research and Professional Development (FRPD) Award in the amount of $7,000 to support her research proposal titled “Optimization Techniques for Large Scale Analytics of Graph Structured Data on MapReduce Platforms.” more
Dr. R. Michael Young has been awarded $16,000 in supplemental funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his research proposal titled “Plan-Based Models of Narrative Structure for Virtual Environments.” more

Dr. Barbara (Jasmine) Adams, director of undergraduate advising in the NC State Department of Computer Science, is a 2011 recipient of the George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award. Dr. Adams was nominated by the Computer Science Department, where her students champion her tireless efforts to help them in every way possible, including academic advising, student group participation and career advice. more
