New research finds that, while an increasing number of minors are using virtual reality (VR) apps, not many parents recognize the extent of the security and privacy risks that are specific to VR technologies. The study also found that few parents are taking active steps to address those security and privacy issues, such as using parental controls built into the apps. Read More »
Vice Chancellor Mladen Vouk to Retire
Mladen Vouk, vice chancellor for research and innovation and a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, will retire on July 1, 2024. Vouk has nearly 39 years of service at NC State, first as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science, including 12 years as a department head, and then nearly 10 years in different administrative roles with the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI). For the last five years, he has served as NC State’s fifth vice chancellor for research and innovation. Read More »
Memorial Scholarship Endowment Launched to Honor Michael 'Gray' Dougherty
On May 6th, friends and family gathered for a special event commemorating the official launch of a scholarship endowment to honor Computer Science (CSC) alumnus Michael 'Gray' Dougherty (BS CSC '20, MCS CSC '21), who passed away suddenly just over a year ago. The Michael 'Gray' Dougherty Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science was made possible because of an outpouring of heart-felt pride and support from his friends and family totaling almost $175,000 to date. The merit-based scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate studying computer science at NC State University starting in the fall of 2024. Preference will be given to meritorious students who are enrolled in the game development concentration, or who have demonstrated an interest in video game design through internships, undergraduate research, work experience, career aspirations, and/or co-curricular experiences. Congratulations Spring 2024 CSC Graduates!
Congratulations to the largest CSC graduating class in department history, as nearly 500 BS, MS, and PhD degree recipients celebrated their graduation during the Computer Science Department's Spring 2024 Diploma Ceremony held on May 2nd. This year's graduating class included 18 Ph.D., 191 M.S., and 255 B.S. degree recipients. Read More »

Amazon has provided a total of $85,000 to the department as research award gifts to support the research efforts of Dr. Xiaorui Liu.
Human Support Technology has donated $7,000 to the department to support the research efforts of Dr. Noboru Matsuda.
ShareFile has provided $25,000 to the department in support of the ePartners Program.
LexisNexis has provided $30,000 to the department in support of the ePartners Program and the Sr Design Center.
Fidelity Investments has provided $15,000 to the department in support of the ePartners Program.
Alum, Erik Troan and his wife, Brigid, have donated $62,500 to the department to support the Troan Scholarship for Computer Science.
Alum, Mark Wyatt and his wife, Robin, have donated $3,750 to the department to support the Excellence in Undergraduate Computer Science fund.
Alum, Kathy Markham and her husband, Bruce, have donated $1,000 to the department to support the Ken Tate Scholarship for Student Success in Computer Science.

Faculty Excellence Abounds - The Celebration of Faculty Excellence is held each spring to recognize outstanding faculty who have received prestigious state, national and international awards, accolades or other distinctions during this academic year.
