Fearrington to Establish Named Scholarship Endowment
By establishing the Jesse Fearrington Scholarship Endowment in his estate plans, Computer Science alumnus Jesse Fearrington (B.S. ’73) will make it easier for Chatham County students to pursue a degree in Computer Science at NC State. more

Protecting Sensitive Data In the Cloud
Researchers from North Carolina State University (led by Dr. Peng Ning) and IBM have developed a new, experimental technique to better protect sensitive information in cloud computing – without significantly affecting the system’s overall performance. more

Antón Named One of the 2011 "eHow Shift 100"
Congratulations to NC State Computer Science professor Dr. Annie Antón on being named to the 2011 Edition of the eHow Shift 100. eHow, an online how-to guide with more than 1 million articles and 170,000 videos offering step-by-step instructions, has recognized 100 women as the 2011 “Women of Shift: a selection of 100 real women who are living their passions, embracing their interests, and overcoming obstacles by discovering the expert within.” more
Researchers Win Best Paper Award at AIIDE 2011
Congratulations to Eun Young Ha, recent PhD graduate, Jonathan Rowe, PhD student, Dr. Bradford Mott, research scientist, and Dr. James Lester, professor of computer science for winning the Best Paper Award at the 7th AI and Interactive Digital Entertainment Conference (AIIDE 2011) held in Palo Alto, California on October 12-14, 2011. more
Makeover at Carmichael
Carmichael Complex will gain a new cardio and weight training area during renovations that begin in early November. The gym will also have a more inviting main entrance when the dust settles next April. more

Carillon Played First Time Since 1989
Chris Gould, the associate dean for administration in PAMS, made musical history at the Memorial Belltower recently when he sat at a keyboard in small room in the basement of Holladay Hall and played NC State’s alma mater. And the music poured out of the Belltower, for the first time since 1989. more
Departmental Gifts & Research
I-Cubed and Lulu have each donated $2,500 in support of the department and the ePartners Program.
TransLoc has donated $10,000 to the department in support of the Sr. Design Center.
Deutsche Bank Global Technology has donated $25,000 in support of the department and the ePartners Program, becoming the department’s newest Super ePartner.
NetApp has donated $10,000 (the 2nd of 2 installments for a total of $25,000) in support of the department and the ePartners Program.

We are proud to report two new additions to our extended family. Monica Watkins (our Director of Finance & Budget) and her husband, Levi, are the proud parents of Levi Nelson Watkins III, born Friday, October 14 at 6:12 pm. He weighed 7 lbs. 8 oz. and was 20 & 1/2 inches long. And Dr. Kristy Boyer (Assistant Professor) delivered a new son, Alder Russell Boyer, on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:27 AM. Alder weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz. and was 19 inches long. Congratulations to both families.
Dr. William Enck has been invited to deliver a keynote at the 7th International Conference on Information Systems Security (ICISS) in Kolkata, India this December. His topic: “Defending Users Against Smartphone Apps: Techniques and Future Directions.”
The paper entitled “Fast Exact ILP Decompositions for Ring RWA”, co-authored by Emre Yetginer, Zeyu Liu, and George Rouskas has been noted on The Spotlight on Optics, which highlights the best papers in OSA (Optical Society of America) Journals. This is the first paper of the JOCN journal ever highlighted as such.
Congratulations to Kanchana Padmanabhan, a current PhD student, and William Hendrix, a 2010 PhD graduate who is now with Northwestern University, for the acceptance of their paper entitled "DENSE - efficient and Prior Knowledge-driven Discovery of Phenotype-associated Protein Functional Modules" to the BMC Systems Biology Journal.
Another paper co-authored by PhD student, Zhengzhang Chen, and recent PhD graduate, William Hendrix, entitled "Community-based Anomaly Detection in Evolutionary Networks," was accepted to the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems: Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Database Technologies.
