Research That Has Gone to the Dogs!
Dr. David Roberts, assistant professor of computer science at NC State University, along with collaborators Alper Bozkur from the ECE department and Barbara Sherman from the College of Vet Medicine, has been awarded almost $1M by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support a collaborative research to develop tools and techniques that will enable more effective two-way communication between dogs and handlers. more
Reeves Named Interim Assistant Dean for COE Graduate Programs
Dr. Douglas S. Reeves, professor and director of graduate programs in the Department of Computer Science at NC State University, has been appointed interim assistant dean for graduate programs in the College of Engineering. As part of his new role, Reeves will represent the College on graduate matters, including serving on the Graduate Studies Committee, the Administrative Board of the Graduate School and the Graduate Operations Council. more
Dey Receives 2013 Anita Borg Facebook Scholarship
Congratulations to Piyali Dey, a graduate student in the NC State Computer Science Department, on receiving a 2013 Anita Borg Facebook Scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference held October 2-5 in Minneapolis. Dey was selected from a competitive pool of over 900 applicants. more
College of Engineering Hosts Record-Setting Career Fair
With over 315 employers, this year’s College of Engineering Career Fair attracted move than 6,500 job seekers, a new record for the annual fall event. more [Editor’s Note: the department’s ePartner Career Connection event, held the day before the start of the Engineering Career Fair, had a record 28 companies and an estimated 500 attendees, also records.]
Studies Show Software Security Students, Professionals Unprepared
According to a 2010 report that was based on the interviews from 2,800 Information Technology professionals worldwide, the gap between hacker threats and suitable security defenses is widening, and the types and numbers of threats are changing faster than ever before. Drs. Laurie Williams, professor of computer science, and Emerson Murphy-Hill, assistant professor of computer science, and Kevin Oliver, associate professor of instructional technology at NC State University, have been awarded $300,000 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their research to motivate and reach students and professionals with software security education. more

Phase 1 of Talley Student Union Complete
With the completion of Phase I of the Talley Student Union renovation, students, faculty and staff turned out in force on Wednesday, Oct 23, to browse the facility and try out several new dining options. more
Aloft Sets Sights on Hillsborough Street
The renovation of Hillsborough Street continues as Aloft gets the green light to build a 135-room boutique hotel across the street from the Belltower. The new hotel will displace the current home of longtime tenants Sadlack’s Heroes and Schoolkids Records, both of which will move to new locations. Plans call for construction to begin next spring and for the hotel to open in mid-2015. more
LexisNexis Welcomed to Centennial Campus
Centennial Campus brought out the big "guns" to welcome its newest partner - LexisNexis - which is moving into the building on Varsity Street formerly occupied by Red Hat. After enjoying lunch under the "big top," LexisNexis employees followed NC State's marching band, mascots and cheerleaders to the Hunt Library, where they were welcomed by Chancellor Woodson. All in all - a great day for LexisNexis and Centennial Campus. more

Spirent Communications, Inc. has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.
Allied Telesis has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Sr. Design Center.
Informatica has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Sageworks has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.
Jesse Fearrington has made a multi-year pledge of $40,000 to launch the Jesse Fearrington Endowment, which will provide unrestricted discretionary support to the department head of the NC State Department of Computer Science.
Alumna and Strategic Advisory Board member, Carole LeMay has donated $1,000 to support the Diversity in CSC Scholarship Fund. Program.
Drs. Christopher Healey and Robert St. Amant have been awarded $38,000 by Soar Technology, Inc. to support their research proposal entitled “Intuitive Information Fusion and Visualization.” more
Dr. Frank Mueller has been awarded $225,000 by Securaboration (via the US Air Force Research Laboratory) to support his research proposal entitled “Operating System Mechanisms for Many-Core Systems – Phase II (PICASO II) Pico-kernel Adaptive and Scalable Operating Systems, Phase II.” more
Dr. David Roberts has been awarded $156,203 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “Speeding Up Learning through Modeling the Pragmatics of Training.” more
Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill has been awarded $249,854 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his research proposal, “Discovering Software Vulnerabilities Through Interactive Static Analysis.” more
Dr. James Lester has been awarded $952,818 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “A Self-Adaptive Personalized Behavior Change System for Adolescent Preventive Healthcare.” more

Congratulations to Marquya Crawford, who has accepted a promotional opportunity to become a Fiscal Manager with the university. While she is leaving the department, she will be working on the NSF desk, so she will remain in close contact with our contracts and grants team.
The department welcomes Kathy Luca, who has joined the Graduate Programs Office. In addition, we welcome Mary Graham, who will providing temporary support in the external relations office during the month of November.
