The NC State Department of Computer Science is very proud to announce that eight members of its faculty have been selected to receive 2010 IBM Faculty Awards totaling over $203,500. more
Virtual Tutors: NC State Receives Grant To Study Artificial Intelligence In The Classroom
NC State researchers, including professor of computer science Dr. James Lester, have received a $3.5 million grant to explore using artificial intelligence, or virtual tutors, as a learning tool in 4th and 5th grade science classrooms. more
New Research Improves Ability To Detect Malware in Cloud-Computing Systems
Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed new software that offers significantly enhanced security for cloud-computing systems. The software is much better at detecting viruses or other malware in the “hypervisors” that are critical to cloud computing, and does so without alerting the malware that it is being examined. more
Alumnus Video Game Developer Talks Apps, Pac-Man
Computer Science alumnus John O’Neill (’96) and Spark Plug Games recently launched Pac-Match Party, a match game inspired by the iconic video game character Pac-Man. You can play it here or download it from the iTunes store. O’Neill talks here about apps, Pac-Man and video game development. more

NC State and other large state universities scored highest with job recruiters looking to hire the best trained and well prepared graduates to fill vacancies in today’s improving job market, say respondents to a recent survey by The Wall Street Journal. more
Dedicated to Progress
The recent dedication of Engineering Building III on Centennial Campus was cause for celebrating and reminiscing. With the opening of EB3 this fall, six of the nine departments within the College of Engineering have made the move to Centennial Campus, providing the college a critical mass on the research campus. more
This Red House
It has been more than 80 years since NC State built a new chancellor's residence. The need for a new residence more specifically designed for meeting the needs of a large university has become apparent. Last spring, ground was broken on a new residence. And despite this particularly hot North Carolina summer, construction is in full swing. more
Departmental Gifts & Research
Google has donated $45,000 in unrestricted support to support Dr. Rob St. Amant’s research in mobile aid for users with disabilities, and $5,000 to support of the Welcome Back Bash, the department’s Year-end Awards Reception and the ePartners Program.
SAS Institute has donated $25,000 in support of the Sr. Design Center and the ePartners Program.
Deutsche Bank has donated $10,000 in support of the Sr. Design Center and the ePartners Program.
Thomson Reuters has donated $2,500 to the department in support of the Women in Computer Science student organization and the ePartners Program.
Lulu has donated $2,500 to the department in support of the Welcome Back Bash event and the ePartners Program.
Dr. Nagiza Samatova has been awarded $1.8M by the National Science Foundation to support her research proposal titled “Understanding Climate Change: A Data Driven Approach.” more Dr. Samatova has also been awarded $330,000 by the US Department of Energy to support her research proposal titled “Damsel: A data Model Storage Library for Exascale Science.” more
Faculty / Staff News
Dr. Zhe Zhang has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor starting this fall. He is currently a Research Staff Member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and his research interests are focused on distributed computing systems.
Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Heckman and her husband, Walt, on the birth of their first child, Fiona, born on August 24th. Mom, dad, and baby girl are doing well!
