Teaching A Computer To Have A Conversation Just Got Easier
Dr. David Robertsand researchers at NC State have come up with a computer program that improves efficiency for authors creating natural language generation (NLG) systems. In other words, it is now easier for programmers to teach a computer how to write in lay English. more
Student Paper Accepted to ICDE 2012
A paper written by computer science students Ye Jin, Eric Schendel and Neil Shah has been accepted to ICDE 2012, a premier international research conference on data engineering. The students are advised by Dr. Nagiza Samatova. more
Anjum Receives Phi Kappa Phi “Love of Learning” Award
Congratulations to Bushra Anjum, a PhD student in the NC State Computer Science Department, on being selected to receive a prestigious 2011 Phi Kappa Phi “Love of Learning” Award. She was one of three recipients from NC State. more
Student Papers Accepted to International Conferences
Two papers written by computer science students Isha Arkatkar, Zhenhuan Gong, John Jenkins, Ye Jin, Sriram Lakshminarasimhan, and Neil Shah have been accepted to premier international research conferences. The students are advised by Dr. Nagiza Samatova. more
Chancellor on 2011 Budget Reduction
For this year, NC State has taken a total budget reduction of about 15.1 percent of our appropriated state funding. That translates to about $79.3 million. In more practical terms, it equates to the loss of funding for 753 administrative staff and faculty positions and reduced capacity in terms of services, course sections and class seats. more
Fidelity Investments Speakers Series Presents Jud Bowman
The Fidelity Investments "Leadership in Technology" Executive Speakers Series welcomes Jud Bowman, founder & CEO of Appia, Inc., on October 25th @ 6 pm in 1231 EB2. His talk topic will be “Overcoming the Challenges of Young Entrepreneurship: How to Start a Successful Company in Your 20s.” Event is free and open to the public. more
The Highest Honor
President Barack Obama has awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to North Carolina State University professor Dr. B. Jayant Baliga. The medal is the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement. Baliga was honored for inventing, developing, and commercializing the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor, which has saved consumers trillions of dollars in energy costs. more
Chancellor Unveils Faculty Hiring Program
Chancellor Randy Woodson has unveiled a plan to attract top faculty to NC State and enhance interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program will award $5 million, in partnership with colleges, to hire individual scholars or groups of up to three faculty members working in strategically important areas. more

Although it won’t open its doors on Centennial Campus until 2013, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library is already making a name for itself, promising to combine futuristic technology with breathtaking design. And while the former governor’s name will get top billing, there’s still plenty of room in the 200,000-square-foot edifice for other North Carolina names, even yours. more

It’s football season, that magical time of year when regalia-bedecked fans gather to cheer on the home team and elevate tailgating to an art form. But fans aren’t the only ones who have favorite colors: it turns out that the football fields themselves also have a preference. Why? McKesson Information Solutions has donated $2,500 in support of the department and the ePartners Program.
Red Hat has donated $5,000 in support of the department and the ePartners Program.
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab has donated $5,000 to the department in support of the Sr. Design Center.
NetApp has donated $15,000 (installment 1 of their $25,000 commitment) in support of the department, the Sr. Design Center, and the ePartners Program.
AT&T has donated $25,000 in support of the department, the Sr. Design Center, and the ePartners Program.
Tony Brown (B.S. CSC '83) has donated $5,000 in support of the Sr. Design Center to fund a pilot launch of a new entrepreneurial-focused student project in spring 2012.
Dr. Xiaosong Ma has been awarded $64,184 in additional funding by the UT-Battelle, LLC to support her joint faculty appointment with NC State and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL). Total funding for the project is now $549,457. more
Dr. George Rouskas has been awarded $429,995 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal titled “Computationally Scalable Optical Network Design.” more
