Scaling Up Personalized Query Results for Next Generation of Search Engines
Led by Dr. Kemafor Anyanwu Ogan, NC State University researchers have developed a way for search engines to provide users with more accurate, personalized search results. The challenge in the past has been how to scale this approach up so that it doesn’t consume massive computer resources. Now the researchers have devised a technique for implementing personalized searches that is more than 100 times more efficient than previous approaches. more
Department Welcomes New Faculty
The NC State Computer Science Department is pleased to welcome two new assistant professors to the department this fall. Dr. Min Chi joined the department as an assistant professor in the Digital Transformation of Education cluster (part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program). Chi’s specialty is applied machine learning and data mining, and her research focuses on artificial intelligence, applying computer science to improve human learning, cognitive science and learning science, and math and science education. Dr. Blair Sullivan joined the department as an assistant professor. Sullivan's research incorporates algorithm design, graph theory, parallel computing, and combinatorial scientific computing to address challenges in understanding and evaluating massive graph data. Her recent work focuses on integrating tools and techniques from structural graph theory into tools for scalable network analysis. more
CSC Department Welcomes New Student Ambassadors
The NC State Computer Science Department is pleased to announce the second class of undergraduate students to join the NC State University Department of Computer Science Student Ambassador Program for the 2013-14 academic year. The program was launched last spring with 24 undergraduates, and we are replacing our graduating ambassadors with 10 additions. more
Tanwir Receives Graduate Industrial Traineeship
Congratulations to Savera Tanwir, a PhD student in the NC State Computer Science department, on receiving a Graduate Industrial Traineeship (GIT) valued at $51,058 from SAS. more
Shanghai Ranking Boosts Engineering
NC State improved in the field of “engineering/technology and computer sciences” on a prestigious international scorecard of universities, jumping two spots from last year to rank No. 27 in the world for 2013. Known as the Shanghai ranking–or more formally as the Academic Ranking of World Universities–the lists are based on a methodology that tracks six objective indicators. Unlike the better known ranking of “Best Colleges” marketed by U.S. News & World Report, the Shanghai ranking does not include subjective measures of an institution’s reputation. more
Fidelity Investments Speakers Series Presents Curtis Brown
Please join us on October 22nd at 6 pm in 1231 EB2 for our next fall 2013 talk in the Fidelity Investments “Leadership in Technology” Speakers Series. Park Promise
With the largest single gift in university history, NC State is taking steps to ensure a viable future for a program that brings some of America’s brightest students to campus. Chancellor Randy Woodson announced the $50 million donation from the Park Foundation on Sept. 27. The gift will plant the seed of an endowment that, with others’ support, will provide permanent funding for the university’s prestigious Park Scholarships. more
Researchers Work to Squeeze More Data from Bandwidth in Mobile Devices
A team of researchers is working on technology that would allow mobile devices to send and receive more data using the same limited amount of bandwidth. The work is supported by a $1.08 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). more
Dutta Releases Book on Proxy Server Performance
Congratulations to Dr. Rudra Dutta, professor of computer science at NC State University, for having his book entitled “Measuring SIP Proxy Server Performance,” published by Springer. The book is co-authored by Dutta’s former student, Sureshkumar Subramanian. more
