Dr. R. Michael Young is a celebrated professor in the NC State computer science program. He designed and directed the undergraduate concentration in Game Development, spearheading the effort of adding this popular concentration, which was approved in the spring of 2008. He is recognized by gaming executives and educators alike as a leader in the gaming industry.
And NC State's video game design program is gaining recognition, too. NC State has been named one of the top undergraduate programs to teach video game design and development on The Princeton Review's second annual list saluting the best schools in the U.S. and Canada: "Top Schools for Video Game Design Study for 2011." Dr. Young has appeared as an expert on radio programs. He has been quoted in dozens of newspaper, magazine, and internet articles. He has received multiple honors including the Outstanding Teaching Award from the NC State Office of the Provost and an appointment to the NC State University Academy of Outstanding Teachers.

In addition, Dr. Young directs Liquid Narrative, a research group that creates content for interactive games. He also is the founder and co-director of the NC State Digital Games Research Center where students from across multiple disciplines team up with faculty from across disciplines to collaborate on current research projects. Both of these NC State resources provide students with hands-on opportunities to be directly involved with gaming research and development.
NC State’s reputation for a solid, high-quality engineering program was part of what drew Dr. Young here 10 years ago. His expertise and passion for computer science, and specifically gaming, have made improvements to an already outstanding program. His dedication to his students and to providing a quality hands-on educational experience makes a significant difference to his students.
