Department to Launch Alumni Hall of Fame

As part of our 50th Year Celebration in 2017, the NC State University Department of Computer Science (CSC) is delighted to announce the official establishment of a CSC Alumni Hall of Fame, with the inaugural class of honorees to be recognized at a special event next fall!

According to Dr. Laurie Williams, interim department head, the department hopes to accomplish multiple goals with the launch. “We want this to serve as an inspiration for current and future students, while promoting the department’s global impact for producing incredible talent that embodies the University’s mantra to ‘Think and Do the Extraordinary!’”

What types of alumni will be honored? Ken Tate, director of external relations, says the selection committee will be looking for alums who have leveraged their degrees in computer science to excel in their careers as leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and/or problem solvers. “Think about our three winners of the College of Engineering’s ‘DEA’ (Distinguished Engineering Alumni) awards, like Keith Collins, Bobby Johnson Jr., and Marshall Brain,” says Tate. “While we have more than 8,000 alumni, we will target the top 1% for recognition, so this will be a truly noteworthy distinction.”

The department requests your help to identify these outstanding graduates. Nominees (living or deceased) should have demonstrated exceptional professional, entrepreneurial and/or service achievements in their selected careers. Our alumni excel in many respects, so rather than rigid criteria, below are some general selection considerations (note that not all need be met):

  • Professional Achievement (e.g. senior leadership, strategic impact, technical innovation, etc.)
  • Entrepreneurship (e.g. business founder, industry disruption, economic stimulation, etc.)
  • Community and/or Public Service (e.g. United Way, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, etc.)
  • Service to the Computer Science Discipline (e.g. research, patents, technical publications, books, special recognition by professional organizations such as ACM or IEEE, etc.)
Nominees should be a minimum of 10 years removed from their graduation date.

Inductees into the CSC Alumni Hall of Fame will be listed on the department’s web site and permanently honored on a special recognition wall in Engineering Building 2, the department’s main building on NC State’s Centennial Campus.

Additionally, the department will recognize a single CSC Young Alumni Award winner each year. This is intended to honor a CSC graduate who has graduated within the past 10 years, whose early career success has been extraordinary and perhaps, offers a glimpse of future things to come.

We encourage you to make nominations through our online form. Alternatively, a paper nomination may be downloaded here.

Nominations are due by each July 1st for that year's inductees. The inaugural class of inductees will be announced and recognized at a special event to coincide with yet to be scheduled Homecoming activities in the fall.

More information about the CSC Hall of Fame selections, recognition events, etc., consult the official CSC Alumni Hall of Fame page.
