Making Program Analysis Notifications Easier to Understand

Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Dr. Sarah Heckman, Teaching Associate Professor of Computer Science, have been awarded $265,853 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their research proposal entitled “Enabling Scalable and Expressive Program Analysis Notifications.”  The award will run from October 15, 2017 to July 30, 2020.

Their work aims to make notifications produced by integrated development environments easier to understand and less likely to overwhelm programmers. They will build on prior work to create new architecture for program analysis notifications. This new architecture will enable toolsmiths to create scalable and understandable notifications for many program analysis tools.

Abstract - Previous research shows that existing notifications produced by integrated development environments are poorly understood and overwhelming to programmers. We propose building on our prior work to create a new architecture for program analysis notifications that enables toolsmiths to create scalable and understandable notifications for a variety of program analysis tools.
