Faculty Promotions Announced
The Department of Computer Science at NC State University is pleased to announce the following faculty promotions, effective August 16, 2009.
Dr. James Lester is promoted to Full Professor. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. His research interests include artificial intelligence, intelligent user interfaces, intelligent tutoring systems, and computational linguistics. He is the head of the IntelliMedia Center for Intelligent Systems, a multidisciplinary laboratory focusing on intelligent human-computer interaction and communication. Dr. Injong Rhee is promoted to Full Professor. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994. His research interests include computer networks, wireless networks, sensor networks, congestion control, multimedia networking, distributed systems, and operating systems. He is the director of Networking Research Lab, a laboratory focusing on the study of network protocols that enhance the wellbeing of computer networks, particularly the Internet. Dr. Xiaosong Ma is promoted to Associate Professor. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003. Her research interests include high performance computing, parallel I/O, storage systems, and scientific data management. She is the head of the Parallel Applications and Middleware (PALM) Lab, with research focused on enhancing the scientists’ parallel computing experience. For more information on Dr. Ma, click here.
Dr. Ting Yu is promoted to Associate Professor. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003. His research interests include security, trust management and privacy protection in open systems, and semi-structured databases. He is a member of the Cyber Defense Laboratory, focusing on security and privacy related research. For more information on Dr. Yu, click here.
Dr. Nagiza Samatova is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. She received her Ph.D. from the Computational Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia in 1993. Her research interests include graph theory and algorithms, bioinformatics, systems biology, data management and data integration, scientific and high performance computing, natural language processing and machine learning. Dr. Ben Watson is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. He received his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1997. His research interests include the relationships between computer graphics and design. He is the director of the Design Graphics Lab. For more information on Dr. Watson, click here.
