Williams Receives ABB Award to Study Software Defects

Dr. Laurie Williams, associate professor of computer science at NC State University, has been awarded $171,594 by ABB, Inc. to support her research proposal titled “Defect Observability.”

The award will run from August 16, 2009 through August 15, 2012.

Abstract: Real-time systems often exhibit some level of non-determinism with regard to defect observability. Testers frequently must run tests multiple times in order to have some assurance that the test actually passes. This costs industry significant time and effort. No one has yet studied these defects to understand why they exhibit non- determinism and what techniques or tools can be used to better observe the software and control the non-determinism.
