Biography
Dr. Peng Gao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. He previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Maryland Robotics Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Gao earned his Ph.D. from the Colorado School of Mines in 2022. He is serving as an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RAL) and the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).
The central theme of his research focuses on collaborative autonomy to enable team awareness for multi-robot and human-autonomy teaming. This vision seeks to empower autonomous robots with the ability to collaboratively and autonomously comprehend both unstructured environments and their human and robotic teammates, thereby surpassing human-level collaboration for complex tasks in open-world settings. Dr. Gao has received the Best Paper Award for Agri-Robot at IROS 2023 and published in leading robotics and machine learning venues, including RSS, ICRA, IROS, ICML, AAAI, IJRR, and AuRo.
