Abstract:
Dramatic technological advances have led to the emergence of critical questions about the optimization of human performance dynamics in real-time, high-consequence environments. These dynamics include physiological, cognitive, and psychological components. Biosystems enable peak human performance through baselines for physical and mental performance, enabling sustained performance in multi-stressor environments and prevention of injuries.
During this talk, Jerry Heneghan will provide a short example set to illustrate how rapid technology changes, evolving operational requirements and new business models are driving computer science research and commercial innovation opportunities. Topics will include computational biology, predictive ‘in silico’ human models, digital therapeutics, XR training, XR emergency medicine and hybrid teaming.
Speaker Bio
Jerry Heneghan is the co-founder and Chief Design Officer for BioMojo, LLC. He is an Army veteran, game/simulation industry leader, medical simulation innovator, and pioneer in computational biology. Heneghan’s background is diverse, having developed numerous medical training platforms at Research Triangle Institute (RTI) along with enterprise network management software at Nortel. He also served as a game producer at Interactive Magic and Red Storm Entertainment, later becoming the Executive Producer for America’s Army, a novel game project focused on military training and recruitment. In 2004, Heneghan and his wife Christine created the startup Virtual Heroes and rapidly developed several successful software packages which led to its acquisition in 2009. Heneghan served as Principal Investigator for the open-source BioGears physiology engine project, funded by the Defense Medical Research Development Program (DMRDP). Most recently, he was “Professor of the Practice” at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conducting research into advanced virtual patients and performing machine learning analysis of military and civilian trauma datasets to improve clinical training. Heneghan continues to develop novel solutions to immediate concerns within battlefield medicine, computational biology, natural language processing, synthetic anatomy for surgical training, XR applications for dental training, digital therapeutics (DTx), and predictive digital human models. A former U.S. Army Aviator (AH-64A Apache), Heneghan earned a B.S. in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an M.B.A. from Duke University.
