Jessica Young Schmidt is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Computer Science at NC State University. Her primary focus is undergraduate education, with an emphasis on introductory and foundational computer science courses. She regularly teaches CSC 116: Introduction to Computing – Java and CSC 226: Discrete Mathematics for Computer Scientists.
Schmidt has implemented several innovative teaching strategies, including a flipped classroom model for CSC 116. To support student comprehension and engagement, she developed a comprehensive end-of-semester exercise that ties together course concepts. Her experience reports on this work earned Third Best Paper in the Experience Reports and Tools Track at the SIGCSE 2020 Technical Symposium.
Since 2017, she has also served as the department’s Accreditation (ABET) Manager, contributing to continuous improvement in curriculum and outcomes assessment. Her research interests include computer science education, active learning, and instructional design.
