Aditi Mallavarapu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at NC State University. Her research focuses on human-centered computing in open-ended learning environments, with an emphasis on supporting exploration-based learning through computational techniques and educational data mining.
Mallavarapu received her B.E. in computer engineering from Pune University in India, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining NC State, she held postdoctoral research positions with the NSF AI Institute for Inclusive Intelligent Technologies for Education (INVITE), affiliated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and with Digital Promise through the NSF-funded Center for Integrated Research in Learning and Computer Sciences (CIRCLS). She has also served as a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh and a research assistant at the New York Hall of Science.
Her work includes the design of intelligent systems for learning in informal and exploratory settings such as museum exhibits and serious games. She has also contributed to the use of network science for investigating interdisciplinary research communities—an effort recognized by NSF evaluators. One of her early projects was among the first to apply educational data mining to reveal learner behavior patterns in open-ended environments. She was named an Emergent Scholar in Research by CIRCLS for her interdisciplinary research contributions.
In addition to her academic training, Mallavarapu has industry experience as a software developer, which informs her practical and applied approach to research in educational technologies.
