Bio

Brian Haberman is a Distinguished Engineer at Fastly, where he focuses on resilience and scalability of global distributed systems. He has over 35 years of experience in network protocols, distributed systems, and system architecture. Prior to joining Fastly, Brian spent two decades as a Research Scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), focused on all aspects of networking and the intersection of high technology and healthcare. Earlier in his career, he held software development and architecture roles at IBM, Nortel Networks, and Caspian Networks.

Brian has spent 30 years contributing to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), serving in numerous leadership roles including working group chair, area director, and nominations committee member. He has authored or co-authored more than 20 Internet standards encompassing work on IP multicast, IPv6, DNS, routing, network management, and network time. He is currently the chair of the Internet Society Board of Trustees and the chair of the NetDev Foundation Governing Board.

Brian holds B.S. (Clemson), M.S. (NC State), and Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins) degrees in Computer Science. His son also holds an M.S. degree in Computer Science from NC State.
